Having to be physically away from the one you cherish can be excruciating, especially if you find yourself walking through a park and seeing another couple holding hands and kissing, but you having to walk alone in your misery since your partner is studying abroad. Fear not! There are more tricks up our sleeve to help this distance feel less daunting. Let’s talk about our senses! Touch and smell integrate into the framework of non-verbal communication more than we think, and those in long-distance relationships often don’t bother to worry about it, thinking that these notions hold no importance. On the contrary, even those in long-distance relationships should actively engage their senses of touch and smell when thinking about their loved one since this promotes their sense of connection. Now, we don’t just mean the ‘self-loving with adult videos at hand’ sense of engagement. What we recommend is gift exchange! Now, you can let your imagination go wild when it comes to thinking up of little things to gift and here are some examples to engage each and every sense, and why its so vital for those in LDRs.

Smell: Gifts that relate to the sense of smell help feel a sense of security and attachment, such as a boyfriends’ hoodie they wore for a week that gets sent in the mail to the girl. Not just sweaty pheromones work – but the perfumes the girls wear can always be sprayed on a small pillow that is slept on as a reminder. Science shows that our partners’ pheromones and chemo-signals that get intertwined with personal items give us a sense of belonging, especially when we miss our partners so much. We understand its not as amazing as ‘the real thing’, but it surely is better than not having any reminders of those we love to feel their warmth from afar.

Touch: Just like with a sense of smell, the sense of touch can be stimulated through certain gifts. When you are sitting there next to your loved one and they’re stroking your arm softly, your body and brain elicit hormonal and neurochemical responses to the gentle strokes. However, its not as unattainable as you might think. Technology nowadays exceeds our expectations whereby wearing a digitally enhanced ring you can feel your loved one’s heartbeat through a distance! Ahh…the wonders of Bluetooth! There are many other remotely controlled gadgets that can be bought in pairs and shared prior to your departure such as remotely controlled lamps that can set the mood in your partners room. If you’re feeling more adventurous and – not to be too tacky but – willing to go the distance, there are remote controlled & Bluetooth accessible sex toys that are available on the market, but they do run at much higher prices. Nonetheless, even small tokens of appreciation go a long way!
